The 1987 Maxwell/Whittlesey Expedition discovered a carved idol of the Kothoga tribe in a hut in the Upper Xingú Rainforest. The idol represented the Kothoga protector figure, Mbwun.

Years later, the figurine was exhibited at the New York Museum of Natural History as the centerpiece of the Superstition Exhibition. The chamber where it was exhibited became a focal point in the ensuing Museum Beast Murders.
